How to save money with greenhouse energy-saving screens in winter and why you need to act in summer and autumn

By: Arjan van der Klaauw

Greenhouses are designed to ensure that the right levels of light and heat can reach the crop. However, single-glass and plastic covers are poor insulators that can affect your ability to maintain the optimum growing climate in the greenhouse. Accurate climate control is critical to keeping the climate conditions in the greenhouse at the desired levels.

Not maintaining the right conditions in the greenhouse can lead to a significant loss in revenue. It can cause crop stress, affect yields, and jeopardize quality and production. Additionally, greenhouses that are insufficiently insulated mean that heat (and thus natural gas) is wasted. This too is highly unsustainable.

While the outside climate conditions cannot be controlled, there are thankfully a variety of ways to more effectively control the climate inside a greenhouse. Insulating the greenhouse with a retractable screen system is a key to gaining more control over the climate. An example of a retractable screen to help control the climate in the greenhouse effectively is an energy-saving screen. Energy-saving screens are available and can be used in various ways to ensure the crop always has the optimum growing conditions and the right amount of light and heat available without wasting energy.

Investing in energy-saving screens

Retractable screening systems with an energy-saving screen provide an affordable solution to insulating your greenhouse. Energy-saving screens can reduce the energy consumption of your operations and can result in high savings of expensive resources such as natural gas. Although a climate screen requires you to make an investment, it will save you significantly more money through lower expenditures on natural gas. And with the price of natural gas on the rise, it will now result in an even quicker return on investment.

Ridder’s wide range of climate screens have been designed to help growers around the world to improve the climate in their greenhouses. By working closely with greenhouse builders and installers, we can find the perfect solution for even the most demanding situation or screening requirements relating to light distribution, climate control, energy saving, light exclusion (blackout) and the protection and shading from sunlight.

Act in summer and autumn to save in winter

Winters can be very cold and some crops require a lot of heat to ensure good yields. We all need to save energy, now more than ever. It might not seem like a priority in summertime or autumn, but if you act now, energy-saving screens can be in installed in time for winter. In fact, the best time to install an energy screen is during crop rotation, to take advantage of the greenhouse being empty.
